Rest in Peace

Aug 2, 2026    Dr. Lovely N. Rahming

When we say rest in peace, we think about death. Jesus Christ is our peace. Rest in person. We are going to rest in peace. For us to rest in the way we live, we have to work at quieting noise. Noise keeps us in a state of stimulation. There are different types of noise: environmental noise, intermittent noise, relational noise, and even internal noise. Noises fragment our attention, leaving us with partial attention.

Some of your noise is outside of you. Some of your noises are in your hands. Some of your noises are in your relationships. God wants you to rest in peace.

During this period of rest, God is growing and stretching us. Some of us like a lot of noise. It keeps us focused on those things and not the things that God wants us to focus on. Rest allows us to have transformed lives.

MAIN POINTS

Hush: Sometimes we need to hush. His power outweighs our noise. Shalom in Greek means peace. In chapter 4, they were called disciples because they were students learning about Jesus. When Jesus woke up, He rebuked the wind because it was the root of the chaos. Be still means to be muzzled. When Jesus says to be still, is God putting you in check? Make hush a part of your lifestyle. The noise in chapter 4 of Mark was not stronger than the power of Christ. I wonder if the noise in your life is about to cause something to break. When you take this posture, the noise has to submit to Christ.  Once you get the noise out of you, spend time with God in silence.

Rest: His presence outweighs work. Chapter 6 of Mark: the Apostles are now. Jesus tells them to come with Him to a quiet place and get some rest. Biblically, rest is not merely doing nothing. It is being refreshed from body and soul. This is where we get Sabbath.  God rested or ceased His work to rest.  Rest is settling in peace. It is to let go and loosen your grip. Be still and know that I am God. Rest involves inner surrender. Rest is both spiritual and physical. God wants you to rest everything in Him. Pull away before you get pulled away. When Jesus says Come away from yourselves, it does not mean to separate yourself from everyone. Remember, we are together in this state of rest. God will give you the strength to let go if you know how to let go. God’s presence is there in the rest. This is an invitation for you to come to Christ.

Jesus took a rest like the Father, and He took the time to rest. Jesus Christ settled the final bill that we accumulated. We could not pay. This payment was made when Christ died on the cross. Rest in peace as you reframe how you relate to God, hush, and rest.
