Two Vices But One Truth
Long before you got on the pulpit, your mother taught you theological lessons: two harlots and a borrowed King, where God answered this King’s prayer. King Solomon was 21 years old when he became king. King Solomon went to Gideon, laid his crown at Gideon's feet, and made a prayer request. He asked God for the wisdom to lead His people (1 Kings 3:9). In the Greek, King Solomon asked for a heart. God was so pleased with Solomon’s request that God gave Him four additional things.
God permitted this first thing with the two harlots to demonstrate God answering King Solomon’s prayer request. To be called a Harlot during biblical times was the worst thing to be called. Watch how King Solomon approached the women with the lowest level within the society.
How did the mother know this was not her child? She knew the smell of her son. She knew her child's appearance. Proverbs speaks of training a child in the way he should go, and it will not depart from him. It means to study the child in accordance with the gifts that God has given the child. You want to create a thirst for God. We have created in children a thirst for church but not a thirst for God. You have to awaken them with a desire for God.
When King Solomon listens to the two harlots’ issue, he is listening to the heart of the ladies. God lent King Solomon a listening heart. The sword was used to discern the lying mother. The lying woman was saying I am the woman who would rather have something killed than have it live. Never have the spirit to want to destroy something that can live and benefit another person.
The true mother was drawn to save the child. She said Oh, Lord, give the liar the child. Give it to the woman who switched our babies and is willing to cut the woman in half. Let him live because of the cost that he paid. Calvary, the Lord knew the cost, the sword of the cross to die. Every Mother’s Day is a sign of God’s love.
